The Innkeeper

Know any 20th century innkeepers?
I played the part this year . . .
not type cast in some Christmas pageant,
but in my own five-bedroom home.
Just too busy . . .

Too busy with family, shopping, decorating the house,
parties—the usual holiday routine;
too busy to joyfully include unexpected guests
who needed a room for a couple of nights.
It was bad timing . . . inconvenient.
Didn’t they know it was only three days until Christmas?

And then I remembered Bethlehem.
